1. Use natural light as much as possible – If you have large
windows and skylights, you will be able to enjoy a well lit house
without switching on the lights as long as there is natural light outside.
This saves on electricity by eliminating the need of lighting in the
day time. Also, using good quality LED lights can
help you save on electricity,
So replace your incandescent bulbs with energy-efficient light bulbs.
Aside from saving energy, energy-efficient
bulbs also last longer than conventional bulbs.
2. Use efficient insulation solutions – If you insulate your Attic as well as walls adequately,
the house will remain warm in winters and cool in the summers. This will automatically reduce
consumption of electricity as the use of air-conditioners or heaters will be reduced or contained.
3. Ensure appropriate ventilation – Adequately and appropriately placed
windows keep the house well ventilated. This will keep a draft through the house.
This is more appropriate where the days are warmer. This reduced the need for a cooler.
4. Energy efficient appliances – With more and more people becoming environmental aware
and concerned about the negative impacts of global warming, efforts are in place to
produce appliances and devices that are far more efficient in their consumption of Energy.
There are different grades of refrigerators that you can choose from.
The newer refrigerators are more energy efficient, so when you are buying
a new refrigerator you can opt for an energy efficient model.
If your existing refrigerator is old, you can think of replacing it with a newer one.
Similarly, there are energy efficient solutions available for washing machines, dishwashers,
air-conditioners and heaters. Now, when you read this, you may wonder about the research
that you will need. But do not worry, there is an appropriate grading and stamps on each
appliance that will help you decide on the best available
appliance within the range that you are looking for.
5. Solar energy is the way forward – Energy from the sun is clean and free.
The main costs that you may incur are the purchase of the equipment and its installation.
But once done, the savings more than compensate for the investment.
There are solar water heaters that can provide warm water for the entire household.
Again, proper installation is required to get the maximum benefit.
Consumers can also opt for heat pumps which are a great way to save energy.
On days where the solar heater or solar geyser may not be fully functional
due to weather conditions, you can use a backup electric geyser.
6. Water saving equipment – Avoid using devices and appliances
that use too much water. There are showerheads that save
water and where flow can be restricted.
Water flow restrictors can even be installed on other water outlets.
This helps save water which is also scarce.
Other than these changes to your appliances, daily changes in your life
can also help you save energy. Say, when you are boiling water,
only boil as much as you need.
Switch off appliances when not required. Switch off lights and coolers
or heaters when they are not required.
Remember saving energy in your home has a number of direct and
indirect benefits, such as saving you money as well as helping to save the environment.
So small investments and changes to your lifestyle can have
a direct benefit in both regards.
